Saturday Night

Another epic night in Las Vegas provided unparalleled racing excitement and freestyle thrills at Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam World Finals XIII presented by NGK Spark Plugs with the greatest field of competitors in the sport battling for two world titles ended with Tom Meents and Maximum Destruction extending his amazing record of World Championships to 10 when he won the World Racing Championship for the second straight year and sixth time overall, then Cam McQueen received the ultimate payback from the event that saw him fall a tie-breaker short of last year’s freestyle crown when he turned in an even more spectacular performance this time to take the Canadian themed Northern Nightmare truck to the no doubt about it freestyle win, McQueen’s first World Freestyle Championship.

With Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam fans from all over the globe roaring their approval all night a racing bracket full of surprises ended with the most familiar sight in the sport, Meents holding another World Championship aloft in front of his screaming fans at sold out Sam Boyd Stadium. Meents’ run to yet another world title went according to a familiar format. Meents had Maximum Destruction just fast enough in Friday night’s Double Down Qualifying to grab a critical top eight seed and the accompanying first round bye, then continued to add to his record setting race win total on the sport’s most difficult race course sliding through the final turn, having to come from behind a couple of times to boot, in route to the title.

Damon Bradshaw had his greatest racing night ever in his new Monster Energy truck, making it to the UTI Championship Round for the first time in his career and gave Meents all he wanted in the battle for the title. The new video based electronic timing system with its photo freeze frame finish line program allowed the best and most exact view ever of the many near dead heat races and was needed most of all in the classic World Championship Race. Maximum Destruction and Monster Energy both ran brilliant races and flew across the finish line simultaneously, Maximum Destruction defeating Monster Energy by .02 of a second according to the electronic timing system.

McQueen would then make sure the tie-breaker would not be needed this year debuting his new Northern Nightmare in the Advance Auto Parts Service is our Best Parts Freestyle competition to crown this year’s freestyle champ. This year McQueen was 7th in the performance order and for the second straight year once he got into the hot seat he refused to leave it and this year no one was able to equal his score of 38, only two points short of the highest total ever scored in this annual battle for the top freestyle prize. As great as Cam was in 2012 when he landed the first back flip ever in this competition, this year was even more sensational. Within the first half of regulation time a huge Northern Nightmare leap sent the truck end over end, landing on the wheels and continuing. Then he did it again. McQueen back flipped Northern Nightmare, a complete 360 back on all four wheels and continued pouring the thrills on filling both the regulation and bonus clocks.

After basking in the lengthy standing ovation McQueen stayed in the hot seat as a night full of wow moments saw several of the top freestyle shoes in the game turn in amazing run, highlighted by Bounty Hunter’s twisting flip in the container obstacle, Jimmy Creten ending up second in the competition that he won in 2005. George Balhan gets the nod for the most incredible move that scored no points in the history of the World Finals. After all the scores were in, the bonus time over, Mohawk Warrior’s freestyle continued and just to thrill his Mohawk Nation Balhan not only back flipped his truck but when it landed back on the wheels and bounced up he hammered the throttle and did another back flip. In the end it may have taken an extra 365 days, but this was McQueen’s night and the native of Calgary, Alberta and Northern Nightmare claim the World Freestyle Championship for Canada.

The encore will be long talked about as a perfect tribute to the Grave Digger 30th Anniversary celebration as the floor filled with Grave Digger’s in a spectacular display of freestyle and destruction fitting for every part of the Grave Digger team.
